Oculoplastic Surgery

Oculoplastics, which is also commonly known as oculoplastic surgery, is an eye surgery procedure which is performed by an ophthalmologist who has undergone additional oculoplastic surgery training after their initial medical and surgical training. Oculoplastics covers a wide range of surgical procedures, all of which deal with the eye socket (also known as the orbit), eyelids, tear ducts and areas of the face surrounding the eyes. 

 

Types of Oculoplastic Procedures

 

Oculoplastic surgeons perform various surgical procedures which could be both cosmetic as well as functional. These eye surgery procedures include but are not limited to the following oculoplastic procedures:

 

Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is used to treat various medical conditions such as entropion, ectropion, ptosis, and eyelid tumors. The following eyelid surgery procedures are the most common:

 

  • Blepharoplasty, which is also known as an eyelift

  • Asian blepharoplasty

  • Ptosis, which is the repair of a droopy eyelid.

  • Ectropion repair

  • Entropion repair

  • Canthal resection

  • Canthectomy

  • Cantholysis

  • Canthopexy

  • Canthoplasty

  • Canthorrhaphy

  • Canthotomy, including a lateral canthotomy

  • Epicanthoplasty

  • Tarsorrhaphy

  • Eyelid tumor removal

 

Lacrimal Surgery

This involves all types of reconstructive surgery of the lacrimal apparatus, with the most commonly performed procedures including:

 

  • External or Endoscopic Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR)

  • Canalicular trauma repair

  • Canaliculodacryocystostomy

  • Canaliculotomy

  • Dacryoadenectomy

  • Dacryocystectomy

  • Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) or dacryocystorhinostomy

  • Dacryocystotomy

 

Eye Removal Surgery

This type of surgery falls into three types of eye surgery procedures, namely:

 

  • Enucleation

  • Evisceration

  • Exenteration

 

Orbital Reconstruction

From artificial eyes and eyelids to the treatment of Graves disease, the following orbital reconstruction procedures are performed by an oculoplastic surgeon:

 

  • Ocular prosthetics

  • Orbital prosthesis

  • Orbital decompression

  • Orbital tumor removal
